The Best Places to go in the Lake District With a Campervan

The Lake District is one of the best places to visit in the UK for travellers of all ages and preferences. There’s so much to see, do, experience and taste in this wonderful national park.

It’s also an excellent place to explore during a campervan holiday. But, with so many options, you might be struggling to choose what to plan for your campervan or motorhome trip.

Here at Under The Stars Campervan Hire, we’ve put together this Lake District bucket list for campervanners to give you a little bit of inspiration. Feel free to do everything on this list, pick and choose your favourites or even put together a list of your own. But don’t forget to let us know what you did while you were in the Lakes for your campervan experience!

Stargazing in the Lake District

Is there anything more quintessentially campervan holiday in the Lake District than stargazing? We don’t think so. The Lake District is excellent for stargazing because there’s little light pollution.

Ennerdale

Ennerdale is known as one of the best places for stargazing in the Lake District. From here, you’ll be able to see some of the darkest skies in the whole of Cumbria. This is a beautiful and remote area which gives you that real out-in-the-wild feeling.

Grizedale Forest

Grizedale Forest has a car park, so it’s easy to access when you pull up in your van. It’s also not too tricky to get to. As well as being to stargaze alone, you’ll also be able to attend stargazing events at Grizedale Forest. Click here to find out more about the stargazing events that are coming up.

For artistic inspiration

Are you an avid artist as well as an adventurer? Or would you just like to try your hand at something crafty on your travels? Luckily, there are so many places in the Lakes that are perfect for artistic inspiration.

Yew Tree Tarn, Derwentwater, Rather Heath Tarn, and all 4 of the stone circles (more on those below!) are excellent places to paint, draw or even collage due to their epic Lakeland views. These are just our suggestions - you can get creative and take inspiration for your art wherever you choose.

For culture vultures

The Lake District has a fascinating history, from the stone circles to Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, and so much more in between.

The stone circles

There are 4 stone circles in the Lake District: Castlerigg Stone Circle, Swinside Stone Circle, Burnmoor Stone Circles and Cockpit Stone Circle.

“Why were stone circles made?” we hear you ask. No one actually knows! This unknown aspect of these curious designs makes them all the more fascinating to visit.

You won’t have to pay to visit the stone circles. However, you won’t be able to park your campervan on the sites. The easiest stone circle to access from the nearest parking area is Castlerigg Stone Circle. The others require a walk, with the walk to Burnmoor Stone Circles being the most strenuous.

Wordsworth House and Garden

Located in Cockermouth, you can actually visit the house in which William Wordsworth and his younger sister, Dorothy, grew up. Here, you can experience a guided or audio tour of the house and garden (or go at your own pace), as well as see demonstrations and exhibitions.

As of now, the Wordsworth House and Garden is open from Saturday - Wednesday, 17th May - 7th November. You don’t have to book in advance but you can choose to.

Swimming spots & waterfalls

Aira Force Waterfall

This 70 ft waterfall is one of the most-loved in Cumbria and is surrounded by beautiful scenes and foliage, with an arboretum below. You can park up in the Aira Force car park, but it can get really busy. There’s also a tea room nearby, so you can take a break from campervan cooking.

Swimming

There is an abundance of gorgeous places to swim in the Lake District. Rydal Water, Grasmere, Wast Water, Loweswater and Crummock Water are all beautiful places, and you won’t find any motorboats when you’re swimming there.

Swimming is an awesome activity in the Lake District, but you do need to be aware of the risks. This guide from the National Trust gives some really good safety advice.
